I first learned about Outdoors Without Limits (OWL) from a great friend named Michael Hatten from Goshen,Alabama. I went to a couple of their banquets and helped Michael and his crew set up for a couple of them. To my acknowledge I didn’t really understand until one night in Highland Home,AL what OWL was all about.
The more that I listened to Michael the more I learned. He had told me that a man by the name of Kirk Thomas had introduced him to OWL and the first time he had met him he did not realize that this man was in a wheel chair. When Kirk had gotten out of his truck he had told Michael “Let’s go change the way you look at life.”
Those words are the same words that Michael had told me and they will forever more stick in my head until the day I die. OWL is an organization that was designed to bring people like me and you closer to people with disabilities like kids and adults of all ages. The money raised in the annual banquets that are held are for the chapters of OWL. This money can be there for a chapter to host a disabled hunt or fishing trip for kids and adults of all ages in your community.
The recreational outreach program, Outdoors Without Limits, is leading a nationwide effort to pull together communities committed to help reduce the barriers that prevent disabled people from enjoying the great outdoors.Together, we will help change stereotypes about what defines “ability”. And, through action, we build relationships that change spirits and lives.
Approximately 100 disabled participants and their guide partners will hit the deer wood’s during the 3rd weekend in January. Please join us as we kick off this great weekend full of fun and opportunity. This is a national event hosted by the Troy chapter of Outdoors Without Limits. This fun-filled weekend will have plenty to do of all ages and will be held at Swindall RV Park 162 County Road 5516 “Swindall Road” Troy, Alabama 36081. For more information on this event you can call (334).566.8353 or (334).482.2444 or you can call Michael Hatten at (770).722.5905.
Remember that the way we look at life today could change tomorrow with your help in getting involved and hosting an OWL event in your town. You will never regret helping the one’s you love and the one’s less fortunate.
